There are many varied forms of media used in passing particular information other than entertainment. Movies have for a long time been a source of information and entertainment. Movie producers have relied significantly on movies to enlighten various individuals on particular issues affecting them and the entire global society. One aspect that has been extensively explored via media is political science with respect to classical society. Various movies have been produced in order to enlighten communities on specific issues and concerns of political science. One movie that continues to attract interests of stakeholders within the political science arena is “the new movie Lincoln” (Spielberg). The movie focuses on American politics during the reign of President Abraham Lincoln in the 19th century.
The new movie Lincoln is a historical analysis movie that enlightens the audience on the passage of the 13th Amendment on one hand and the end of Civil War on the other hand. Contrary to many expectations, the movie does not focus on President Abraham Lincoln’s life but rather the aspects of his leadership that were considered to be very effective especially during the last four months of his reign (Spielberg). In this movie, the director, Steven Spielberg aims at depicting President Abraham Lincoln as an effective leader who was not only wise but also very thoughtful despite his poor upbringing. It is through wisdom and being thoughtful that made the president to lobby votes towards adoption of the 13th Amendment, which enhanced the abolishment of slavery and involuntary services (Spielberg).
Two aspects of classical politics are evident in this movie. Firstly, it is amazing to see how President Lincoln, acted by Daniel Day-Lewis, is able to work together with the oppositions. The movie portrays President Lincoln as a valuable and workable leader who believed in unity and compromise for the benefits of Americans. Sacrificing personal views and ideologies in order to ensure that every citizen benefits is an aspect of politics only experienced during the classical period (Spielberg). In the movie, Lincoln lobbies the support of racist democrats in order to help achieving ideologies that would benefit every America. His efforts are seen when the 13th Amendment is passed thereby abolishing slavery and involuntary servitude (Spielberg). Unfortunately, the contemporary politicians have failed to learn from such amazing qualities. It is difficult to find the current president of the US consulting and reaching a compromise with the opposition for the benefits of Americans.
Another aspect of politics displayed in this movie is the qualities required for effective leadership. Throughout the movie, President Lincoln is portrayed as not only wise but also thoughtful. The invaluable qualities of leadership portrayed by Lincoln in this film or movie confirm how effective President Lincoln was during his reign. Thus, President Lincoln continues to be one of the best presidents American has ever had since the classical period. It is therefore important for the contemporary politicians to learn that for one to be an effective leader there is need to have invaluable qualities that stem from wisdom and thoughtfulness (Spielberg).
There is no doubt that this movie is a good piece of art that does not only entertains but also provide adequate and essential information in regards to classical American politics. Moreover, the movie makes the audience to appreciate the work done by President Abraham Lincoln during his reign. It is also a call for all the current politicians to emulate the actions and leadership style of President Abraham Lincoln.
