Concern for quality clinical and healthcare services has risen over the past few years. People want value for their money. They want to be treated courteously, they want to use the best equipment their reimbursements can afford them and above all they want to be guaranteed of their health. However, as the healthcare industry is shifting to adopt more tech-savvy methods of delivering its services, who will be responsible for overseeing the level of quality of health services? Should hospitals and other healthcare facilities have separate quality control department or should the efforts of quality control be integrated into each every activity of the hospital?
However, before we delve into who should be responsible for healthcare quality management, let’s first get know what healthcare quality is. Healthcare quality can be defind as the assessment of the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of health services. As a result of healthcare reform, there is a standard set of quality units and quality improvement techniques that are used to assess the level of quality of the services delivered and suggest methods of improving it.
As such, healthcare leaders are in consensus that both leadership support and clinical staff support both contribute towards healthcare quality. A task that is still largely considered to be the responsibility and forte of physicians is actually a collective duty of very healthcare personnel and other non-staff related items. These items include; clinical data, effective communication skills, sufficient resources, IT and analytical skills. With this empirical data, shouldn’t we now strive to incorporate quality management in every activity of the hospital? In conclusion, I think that the quality department should not be left to pursue quality improvement in isolation and that every player should work towards achieving improved quality healthcare.
