The usual criticism we encounter when adopting sustainable practices is that it does not promote growth. It is well known that nature has its limits and it will sustain only when people adopt a growth strategy that is environmental or nature-friendly. However, fiscal interest is often compromised while choosing eco-friendly measures. While this has always been the criticism with sustainability, currently we have a different type of criticism and that is the politicization of sustainability. According to this, sustainability regulates life and steals freedom. The increasing political pressure on choosing sustainability has caused many countries to withdraw their membership from ICLEI, a local government body that is concerned with the implementation of sustainable practices.
Local and state governments implement policies and rules to ensure a sustainable future. Very often these decisions are influenced by corrupt values and not made in the interest of the nation. Such political decisions can create complicated repercussions. For example, energy is very important for growth and development. Through renewable energy sources are sustainable, their application is currently limited. Extraction of energy from renewable sources is labor intensive and costly. On the other hand, non-renewable energy cause pollution, but powers most of our day to day technologies and applications. In the absence of an equally efficient renewable energy, political agenda to restrict the use of non-renewable resources will not be received favorably by the industries.
Anti-environmentalists consider sustainable environmental policies as a regulation on economic freedom. Politicization of environmental policies has led to the disagreement between environmentalist and non-environmentalist. It is the responsibility of every person to build an economy that is sustainable and eco-friendly. Politicization will only lead to disagreement and will complicate matters further. There is a need for standard guidelines while making decisions on sustainable choices.
