Psychologists argue that manager’s development begins with the ability of the manager to change the self concept through the ability to see and evaluate him/ her self. Thus Paul J. Brouwer took the initiative in 1964 to write an article The Power to See Ourselves to reveal how manager’s perception of self image influences the manager’s behavior and thus how the changes in the self-concept are realized. Self-concept is critical in a manager’s full potential through growth. Managers’ growth is only enhanced by enabling managers to understand their best direction after understanding the situations facing them.

In efforts for Brouwer to drive his points home, he employed certain concepts that he found critical in enabling managers to drive their self-concept towards growth. These include: filters of reality, that allows managers to engage in selective listening; continuing changes because change in behavior is constant; Keystone to change that brings about observable outward change; conflicts in self –concept that requires one to modify behavior; unrealistic self appraisal has consequences and managers needs to evaluate the self-concept with accuracy; ability to overcome the natural resistance; Steps to maturity requires a manager to do self examination, examine personal expectations, make relevant changes in personal/self expectations, and offer broadened expectations; lastly, self-concept requires one to power to self realization through which the manager will grow.
A clear evaluation of the concepts developed by Brouwer reveals that self-concept is an important concept that managers need to embrace in efforts to grow. Without growth, the managers end up not realizing their full potential. As they change their behavior during change, it is important to ensure they remain keen not to over-estimate their potential because that can result to their downfall.
As leader, this article means that I need to evaluate myself and develop a strategy that shall enable me to achieve my full potential. Efforts to achieve my full potential should emerge from within and I should understand the situations and come up with best decisions to address them. Inability to take charge of situation can result to failure, however, optimal caution should be taken to enhance the success of the decision that I make.
