Health Care Human Resources
In the ever-growing health care market, institutions have to find different ways of filling their ranks, and maintaining them to keep costs down to aiding in the many tasks that need completion. Recruitment is the first step in which the hospital or doctor’s office reaches out by different means of media, to contact those who would fill the position. Many find it standard to post the opening on a job-classified websites, like monster.com, indeed.com, etc. (This gives them the ability to reach out to many at a relative low cost. There is also the use of print media such as billboards, and news advertisements. These also have the ability to be seen by many and rendering a positive result. Gusdorf (2008) suggests selection is then done by means of filtering candidates by certain skills and criteria from their resume or electronic submission. Selection is also done from electronic quizzes/tests, and interviews to gauge a person’s ability. Once selected the employee needs to understand the details and processes of the job. Onboarding of the employee is done in several ways there are lecture where the person is taught the exact method. If there were transferable skills and experience, shadowing and mentorship can be done to fulfill the onboarding process. Gaining new personnel is an expensive process, and attrition can cost the institution greatly. Retention is important to keep that cost low. Retaining employees can be done in numerous ways. The most important one that can be influenced is the environment the person works in. Setting up the correct culture and place to work will lower attrition and keep it low. Competitive pay, and benefits is a way that many utilize to keep employees. There are some who in addition to pay and benefits, offer sign on bonuses with term requirements. This process of Recruitment, Selection, Onboarding, and Retention is a universal issue that the health care market is battling as it is growing and there are more jobs than experienced people who can fill them.
