Introduction
The raven is poem which talks about the undying devotion of love. The narrator in the night of December sits to read the book forgotten lore as a way to forget the loss of his love called Lenore. As he continue reading the forgotten lore a bird called raven steps into his chamber when he went to investigate it perches on the bust of pallas above his door.
When the raven comically and serious positions itself it makes him get amused. The man out of his curiosity asks the bird to tell him its name .Surprisingly the bird answers him by the name Nevermore. This name amuses the narrator even more as it sounds the name of his lost lover, Lenore. The narrator becomes curious to know what the bird meant by the name Nevermore. He thinks that may be this bird has been sent by a God so as to forget nevermore as he had forgotten his other friends. But as the man thinks that Lenore will soon get out of his life the birds mentions the name nevermore for the second as if answering him what he thinks about (Poe,2005 p.89)
The narrator being determined and curios to learn more pulls out his chair and places it directly and in front of the bird. He goes in silence and thinks for a moment. His mind goes into deep thinking and reasoning about the past and especially his lost lover,Lenore. He imagines the presents of the angels surrounding him and wanders if his God has send him the angel in form of the bird, the raven so as to forget the Lenore his lost lover. The bird for the third time replies negatively. This suggests to he should forget his memories. The narrator seeing this negative suggestion becomes angry and he calls the bird a bad evil. He finally asks the bird whether he will reunite with his lover nevermore when he goes Heaven and the bird replies by its usual answer Nevermore. He becomes mad and commands the bird to go back its place but it does not go. As the narrator finishes his narration the bird is still perched on the bust of pallas. The narrator finally admits that his life is trapped by the memories of his lost lover and he has lost everything because he used to love Lenore very much (Poe, 2005, p.90).
The poem which is narrated by the poet himself talks about romantic love. It talks about the undying devotion towards the lover. The narrator presents the conflict between forgetting and desire of remembering the lost love. He seems to focus himself about the loss he got by losing Lenore. As he questions the bird this suggests that the narrator is depressed and has a feeling of loss. He begins y regretting about the loss of his love, Lenore and he finally becomes mad due the memories of the lost love which have occupied his mind (Poe,2005,p.88)
The poet presents the poem by use of alliteration. The bird by the name Nevermore comes into the narrator’s door and perches on it. The name nevermore alliterates the name of his lost love Lenore. This suggests that the narrator still had in mind his lover Lenore. Nevermore means a lot to the narrator. He thinks that the bird was sent by God so as for him to forget his lost Lenore. The poet also uses allusion in his work. The presence of the bird Poe, presents deep and never ending memories of his lost lover. This suggests that love memories are hard to forget.
