Chris Goldfield, one of the chief scientists, was 200 miles away from Tohoku when 2011 tsunami and earthquake struck that place. He checked the exact time, as every seismologist know that the decent proxy for its magnitude is the time an earthquake lasts. The shaking hit Four-minute mark and it was a proof that the Japanese Cassandra right. By the end of the day, Tohoku tsunami killed a bit more than 18000 people and cost 220 billion dollars, however, for Chris this quake was a sign of another one coming.
Many people know only one fault line named as San Andreas, however, there is another one known as the Cascadia subduction. Based on Chris’s research, we know that the ratio of this earthquake to happen in 50 years are approximately 1:3, however, it is almost impossible to argue the huge scale of this problem. The discrepancy between what regions were prepared to withstand and what the best scientists predicted caused the devastation in Japan in 2011. The same situation may occur in known Pacific Northwest as the discrepancy is very huge.
The compressional wave radiating outward from the fault line will be the first sign that Cascadia earthquake has begun. Then the electrical grid will fail and water tanks will smash all gas lines that are interior. All buildings that aren’t fastened to own foundations will simply slide off and will begin to fail. From many small problems conspiring to cause one very large problem, the certain disasters stem. Then the huge wave will come, and the huge destruction will start. In comparison to natural disasters, a tsunami may be the one of completely not survivable. The high time to save everyone from a tsunami is before it occurs, but, unfortunately, the region has not yet taken serious measures.
In my opinion, this article describes in-depth how serious the problem of Cascadia earthquake is. Moreover, it shows that the discrepancy between what is predicted and what the region is prepared is enormous. Unfortunately, the region ignores the issue that the only way to save us from a tsunami is to do it before it arrives and most cities are not even prepared to this disaster. We all need to hope that the science is wrong and it will not happen for another thousand years.
