Teaching is considered to be one of the noblest professions. It is also a very important one. These are the people with whom our children learn and grow up into the adults we dream they would be. They are entrusted with the future generation, with the future leaders of the world. Some say that modern education is on the road of limiting a teacher’s actions in the classroom. Children and students are said to need to learn by themselves. Was the past system flawed that we now have to change it? Let’s discuss the role of a student and a teacher. It does differ culture to culture, so a couple of examples should be considered.
I strongly believe that a teacher is there not only to give the material of his or her subject. He or she is there to make children grow and teach them what is right or wrong. It is these people that give us one of the most important skills, which we will use for the rest of our lives – the ability to study. It may only seem that studying is easy. You just have to open a book, read it and then repeat it. But if it were so simple, everyone would be a genius. This really is a skill that comes in handy no matter how old you are. I believe that giving the needed knowledge to obtain it is one of the most important roles of a teacher.
Students shouldn’t be ignored either though. Nothing comes without effort and no matter how much the teacher tries, it is impossible to teach someone who is not listening. By the way, listening is another important skill that is obtained at school with the help of teachers. Nevertheless, students that have more willingness to learn simply get more from school. It is the students that need to do their homework, that need to revise everything learned at school and try hard to master all that the teachers gives.
The role of a teacher is seen differently in different cultures. In the US, a teacher should be fun and is seen as a friend. In east Europe, a teacher has more power. It is true that this is still the person to turn to if and whenever needed, but a bit more strictness is involved. The Netherlands have recently taken it even in a completely new direction. The new legislation they introduced recently gives the students enough power to get a teacher fired. It is easy to see just how different the teacher-student relationship is around the world.
After your parents, it is the teachers and the coaches that are the next adults that appear in a child’s life. They definitely have a huge impact on girls and boys and cannot be substituted by any book. In the end, they still need to be taught how to read it and how to learn from it. The role of a teacher and a student may differ around the world, but one thing remains clear – a teacher is there to help the child become a grown-up and give him or her all the necessary skills to succeed in life. We want these people to take an active role in our child’s life as we trust them to guide them to the right path.
