Feminism refers to the views held towards women and the role they are supposed to play in relation to the male gender. This may differ according to the age of the woman, the environment she has been brought up in and other influences such as level of education and technological development. For a long time now, the society has been fighting the need to have women recognized and hence being able to equally participate in economic activities. Despite the developments that have been made so far, the feminism battle is far from being won. This is because of the various challenges that women face with every step they make. The fact is that there has been a supremacy battle between men and women with women demanding equal recognition. This has not gone well for the male species that has been feeling threatened with the developments being made.
Away from the gender fights, feminism in the society has in the past years revealed the sensitive nature of gender balance. I must acknowledge that the need to have women recognized has brought about a lot of change in the society and especially overcoming the disgrace that women have been facing due to their gender role. Women are important members of the society whose psychological makeup ensures some wrongs have been made right. Despite the need for the females to fit in the considered masculine roles, they can never exchange their other responsibilities such as child birth and general family care. These are areas that have made the feminine gender special and outstanding. Feminism has ensured that the society recognizes and accepts the role played by women in the society (Shaw & Janet 30).
Even though equality may not be achieved in the long run, the empowerment that is being carried out has minimized on the rate at which women were being abused and looked down on. Feminism movement has brought together women from all backgrounds and culture and ensured they acquire the skills they require to survive in an ever changing world. Contrary to what many believed, feminism is not about replacing the role played by men but rather empowering women to face the challenges they face on a day to day basis. This hence means that women recognize that they are not a lesser sex and hence need to speak out on things that affect them. The great burden at times placed upon women and the expectations from the society can be too much if not addressed (Shaw & Janet 120). It is hence important for them to have the assurance that they can find an avenue where their issues will be addressed and solved once and for all.
Feminism has personally changed my view on how I look women and made me appreciate the role being made. Realizing that women are the founders of the society, they need to be protected and equipped to effectively handle their responsibilities. It is rather unfortunate that the society at times requires so much for women without recognizing that they may not be equipped to deliver. When a woman fails in their responsibilities, it is easy for them to be called names and even ridiculed by even their fellow women. However, with feminism, the society is meant to understand that a woman will only deliver as per how well equipped she is. With this information, the society has been able to understand women and hence ensuring that they are accorded an environment that will bring the best out of them.
