Write 1 paper after reading David Shield’s article entitled THE ROOTS OF TASTE
- What is the best sentence in this essay? Why?
David Shield is the great literary character a professor, a writer with broad writing scope from fiction to biography. The referred essay of David Shield elaborates his passion of exploration in the dimension of food and its properties at modern times under the influence of experimentations. The sentence I found most appealing is the last sentence of the first paragraph that states,
“Here I want to recall the heady heyday of the roots and tubers, when experimentalists made a rich variety of cultivars common on American farms and created a diversity of new varieties to better suit the human palate, the diet of livestock, and the replenishment of the soil.”
The reason behind the pleasure is the flow of tone, illustrating the complexity of modern time’s experimentation on food elements to match the body requirements of human beings. He depicted his comprehensive vision encompassing the complete process of life cycle capturing nutrients requirement of soil, livestock, humans and the plantations itself.
- What's the second best? Why?
“Questions of taste were governed by a notion of communicability”. The sentence in the simplest way communicates author’s conception merged with the observation of analysts. Single word “communicability” serves the very idea of the concept of the observation of food parameters from the point of view of the author.
- Describe Shield's authorial voice.
- What kind of sources does Shield use in his article?
The article “Roots of Taste” is an enthusiastic piece of writing on the subject of the activities of horticulturists to devise a mean that is suitable for the complete circle of nourishment disbursed from plants. In this article Shield have used his explicit knowledge gained through literature. He has also consumed the same in drafting his other literary pieces like the golden seed, Carolina golden rice and traditional American rice etc.
- How does he use them?
The information Shield have used in his writing is dissolved with his analysis to throw light on the topic which needs attention of scholars to address the multidimensional results obtained by the experimentalist in the field of cultivations for food and subsequent impact on tastes.
- Why does Shield say this topic matters? (Why should the reader care?)
Again the determinative voice that strengthens the subject at this point depicts the utter advocacy of the author on the importance of the same. His further writing in the same field also witnesses his enthusiasm. His point of rendering such an importance to the subject with consecutive care of reader aims to highlight the reality before the readers. Perhaps he aims to evolve the essence of the study to take hold on the metaphysics of the reader with least dubious information. Furthermore, the study is also of great importance for from reader’s perspective as it enables the reader to study the rapid development of Science in the field of Biology which is directly related to our being.
