Hustling is not stealing clearly portrays the life that some people go through. The author of the book tries his best to make the readers know that some people who are caught up in professions such as prostitution are just there because of the circumstances that force them into such a life. Hustling is not Stealing is a real life story of a girl in Ghana who got into the life of prostitution. Inside Deep Throat, on the other hand, is a 2005 documentary on the 1972 pornographic film, Deep Throat that got a lot of reception. It made $ 600 in profits. However, there was a lot of opposition for the movie. This paper seeks to compare the book Hustling is not Stealing and the documentary Inside Deep Throat.
Women like Linda and Hawa tell the story of many women in the sex industry. The sex industry includes pornography and prostitution. However, people have always looked down on prostitution as a career. They glorify pornography but look down on prostitutes. A prostitute and a porn star do the same work. Some of the time they do not feel like doing that work but are forced into it by circumstances.
The abuse that Linda underwent in the making of the documentary, Inside Deep Throat is just a fraction of what these women go through. Their clients might murder some of these women. When abused, nobody fights for these women's rights. Inside deep throat is still being sold regardless of the confession by Linda that she was raped in the filming of the documentary
Sex industries violate the rights of women. Many of the sex workers are often abused by their clients. They lower the self-esteem of most of these women who later on experience a lot of emotional pain. However, in Hawa's case, she took advantage of the misfortunes that life brought and took advantage of the situation gaining gifts from men. Hawa makes most of what she has by introducing humor. Her comical nature makes her survive the harsh conditions she faces. The women in the story have to sleep with multiple men to get money for basic survival. Some of them are mistreated and abused by the men they sleep with. The sex industry does not consider the rights of these sex workers. Some of them are even paid below their stated agreement.
In the documentary, Inside Deep Throat, the main character, a porn star Linda Lovelace is a clear example that the sex industry mistreats women. Linda apparently claims that she was raped in the making of the film. The sex industry is negative for women because most of them result to using drugs to cope with the problems that they face. Linda said that her ex-boyfriend had threatened her with a gun had she not looked convincing enough for the cameras. Her boyfriend Traynor forced Linda into prostitution. The proof of this is that the main character divorced her husband, got married again and became an anti-pornography advocate. \The government was also a strong opposer of the film citing that it was too obscene for the audience to watch. Linder in a later interview said that her husband was the one who received payment for the scenes she acted. She did not receive any payment.
In both Hustling is not Stealing and Inside Deep Throat, we see that women are abused against their will. Some of the women in pornographic movies and books are often forced into such situations. They do not enjoy what they do since they feel lesser the people they are. Both women chose to rise over their predicaments. Hawa chooses to involve comic and always be happy no matter what she faced. Linda on the other hand after acting the scenes she did in the movie quit pornography. The government should put into place strict rules that protect the welfare of women who are in the sex industry. They should be given a chance to bring out their grievances. The sex industry, on the other hand, should avoid exploiting and using these women. It should consider their rights since they too are human beings.
