The Siege Of Leningrad Essay Examples

In this movie which also brings the subtitle, ‘The City of Thieves’, we have a graphic sketch of what was going on in Leningrad as this city was submitted to the most terrible siege in living memory. The film, at least these parts, focuses on certain situations where the citizens of this great city suffer the most horrible privations without food or water and they start dying like flies. This contrasts with the life of the communist Party members who are administering the city and who live a life which is pretty much a normal one when compared to the normal citizen. They have practically everything they want in all the food, drink and necessary foodstuffs that one can imagine and this compares quite terribly to the situation for the normal person who is facing death at every corner.
Naturally enough, the film director chooses to focus on specific incidents in the siege to add to the effect of everything. This results in a particular focus on the ration queues where people fall dead to the floor in their last gasps. The city continues to descend into a maelstrom of horror and terror as the besieged suffer ever more privations even at the hands of their own countrymen. The City of Thieves is definitely a strong film which has several redeeming aspects and which moves ahead quite brilliantly on all fronts. Its portrayal of the horrors and privations which the citizens of Leningrad endured is surely something to be truly appreciated and all the characters in the film move in their own ways to the final message of eventual redemption.
