As time flies by, the world changes with it. People constantly adapt to the ever-changing environment. Quite a few differences can be pointed out when comparing the modern generation with that of the sixties. Apart from all the usual changes, like those in art, music, fashion, there are certain things that greatly distinguish the representatives of these times. I believe that some of the major differences can be seen in the sphere of communication, standing of racial groups and the place of women in society.
It is impossible to imagine a man or woman of today without access to the Internet. The World Wide Web has opened up huge possibilities and now connects people all over the world. People in the sixties never dreamed of talking with a friend from Japan through a little screen and camera in front of you. The facilitation of communication has made an impact on the modern relationships. Even though it seems to be easier to talk and exchange information, that face-to-face contact which was still very much present in the 60s is growing weaker and weaker.
We are living in a time when the president of one of the most powerful countries in the world is African American. In the sixties, this was but a dream. Black people fought for their freedom and they fought hard. This was not an easy time for them, but it is thanks to that generation that the people of today find racism a negative characteristic. However, it is not only ethnic groups that found more freedom.
The modern woman can be any one she likes. However, she is drawing further and further away from the traditional mother-role of the family. Even though women today have more possibilities and opportunities, many are finding it hard to balance work and family and feel guilty for loss of time with their children. This was something not heard of for the 60s generation.
In the last 60 years communication has evolved, racial groups have gained more freedom and women have received more opportunities than they ever hoped for. Just a mere 60 years can come with a huge number of technological breakthroughs. People evolve and so do their beliefs and goals. Time comes with change, but it is not without remembering the past that we can build a future.
