Introduction
The paper has the objective of thoroughly analysis a paper on the impacts of age stereotypes in the older people in the society. The topic seeks to showcase how older people are constantly discriminated in the society in terms of tasks given, rights, treatment, and financial benefits or recognition. Such discrimination often affects how the society perceives old people. In my perspective, such discrimination affects their quality of life, how the older people relate to people in the society and their self-esteem. The topic will be explored through a review and marking of the paper in question.
The introduction of the paper will be awarded a 6. The introduction serves well in ensuring the reader understands what the discussion will be about and present them with the major concerns of the paper. However, it does not fully reflect what the topic is about. The topic is about the impacts of stereotypes on the old adults and does beyond the perception of the people about them. The introduction should have gone into other impacts that ageism has, or rather, how the negative perceptions affect the older people. Also, the paper discusses the causes of ageism, which is not mentioned in the introduction.
In literature review, the paper does not fully use the articles given to emphasize its points, but rather, repeats itself. For instance, the article by Alex Anish goes into detail about the kinds of abuse that the elderly frequently undergo. For instance, the common abuses such as threatening, verbal abuse, and withholding of information from older people are recognized by the author but are not mentioned in the paper. The article does not address the aspect of the elderly not being recognized in the society. Rather, it addresses aspects of their rights not being recognized as being important and given the same attention as the issues of race or gender discrimination. Also, the paper denotes that the reversal in roles is brought up in various articles but does not mention them. Instead, it cites the article by Alex that does not talk about the issue. It says that the articles chosen explain the aspect of ageism but does not mention them. Therefore, the part on the literature review will be awarded a 7.
The theoretical representation in the paper is excellent, which would earn it a 24. The widely criticized disengagement theory by Elaine Cumming depicts the uselessness of the older generation in the society. The paper correctly placed the theory by explaining the importance of old people in the society. The paper accurately predicts the void in wisdom that would be felt from the lack of old people. In addition, theories such as activity and social interaction have been well represented. Old people perform an active role in leading the young people in the society. They form the backbone of the acceptable values that are creating a sense of organization in the society.
The paper is okay on the analysis and scores a 21. Ageism is a great undermining concept to the self-esteem of older people who often feel left out of the society. The ridicule is a poison for how they view themselves, just like the paper denotes. Eventually, the elderly in the society start to lose hope and live lonely lives. They carry themselves in a detached manner because they are afraid and look at themselves as burdens because of stereotypes. The denial part is also true since most of them would want to do certain things to escape from their ages. They are also differently treated because of the standards that the society has set for them.
The paper has a conclusion that is average, but does not give proper recommendations. For instance, older people should be included in the different happenings and committees in the society. Every authoritative body should have at least two elderly people to help curb the stereotypes. On this note, the paper scores a two on summary. The references are excellent and score a 9.
Conclusion
In general, the paper was a good read even though it has several grammatical issues and a repetition of words such as cohort. The paper, however, did not have any outside knowledge or something different to contribute to the topic. Even so, it showed a good understanding of the topic and earned an overall score of 69.
