Article review
The name of the reviewed article is Ontario's Public High-School Teachers Preparing for Possible Fall Strike. The article is written by Jane Taber and published on 5th June, 2015. The main focus of the article is the representation of the four unions who prepare for a strike and their appeal for a government to take the matter seriously. The author of the article foresees a mass strikes in the region of Ontario as "two million students head back to school in the fall" (Taber, 2015). The demand of the representatives of the teachers includes a demand for conciliator because the high-school representatives believe that the ongoing issues can only be solved if intensive talks between them and the governments are led. As students did not go to school for six weeks, Ontario Progressive Conservative Leader, Patrick Brown says, “We are seeing education hurt. We are seeing what is critical education for young people in Ontario damaged” (Taber 2015). Furthermore, union representatives emphasize that the government is not seriously concerned about the possible strikes in education because they did not react to the calls for negotiations that came from the union representatives.
The strength of the article is that it is short and precise. From the beginning of the article, the author writes about the issue.
The presented evidence in the article is convincing.
There is an implicit argument in the paper that the teachers will definitely go into strike if they do not see a good will on the behalf of the government to deal with their problems.
The article is clearly written and the audience is defined.
The topic of the article is up-to-date and creates a lot of space for debating.
The weakness of the article:
Based on the article, it might be said that the content of the article is confusing because the paragraphs of the article are short and the author skips from one union representative to the next.
The main topic is not explained in detail, it might be said that the author only lsits the issues of possible strike.
The reviewed article is described in an informative manner. Based on the short paragraphs, it might be concluded that the author assumes that the audience has a previous knowledge about the strikes in education. Additionally, one of the major flows of the article is that the space for opposing side (the government) is not given. Due to that, it might be said that the article is biased. On the other hand, the author provides detail information about the position of each union regarding the possible strike in high-schools and their point of view. The article lacks in ethos and pathos and therefore, it loses in its quality and depth.
