The Sun Also Rises is Ernest Hemingway's novel, written in 1926. Based on real events that occurred in the life of the author.Hemingway began the novel "The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta)" on July 21, and finished the first version of the September 6, 1925, but it took a thorough revision of the text; novel came out (Charles Scribner's publishing house) October 22, 1926 and immediately became a literary sensation. Difficult innovative novel, it is not simple ideology caused still unsolved disputes of literary critics.
Gradually there were two major and opposite by the content views on the novel. Carlos Baker, based on the writings of Hemingway, in his analysis focuses on ethically positive, life affirming in the beginning of "Fiesta". In a very interesting, kind and true, analysis Carlos Baker admits, in my opinion, a basic mistake, based in the crucial issue of the letters of the author, and not from the text of the work.
F. Young, in contrast to K. Baker, in his assessment of "Fiesta" comes from the content and function of the plot of the book, staying mostly at its tragedy underscores the theme of hopelessness. Very convincing analysis F. Yang suffers from a certain one-sided and does not allow to cover all the essential aspects of the work of Hemingway. However, tragic line in the book is so strong that many foreign and Russian issledovateli2 to some extent share the opinion F. Young. Obviously, this question cannot be answered unequivocally.
Hemingway novel supplied with two epigraphs. The first phrase quoted by G. Stan: "you are all a lost generation." The second is the famous passage from Ecclesiastes:
“"One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.” (Ecclesiastes, Hemingway, p. 1)
Actually, the difference in the interpretation of "Fiesta" is caused by the fact that some authors believed Hemingway basic idea of "earth abideth for ever", and others - about the "return of the wind on their laps." (Hemingway, p. 1)
The compositional scheme of "The sun also rises (Fiesta)" is simple. Jacob Barnes, staff Paris reporter of the American newspaper, loves a thirty four years old English Lady Brett Ashley and love her since the days when he was in the hospital, where she was a sister. The lovers aredeeply unhappy, since the nature of injury deprives Jake opportunities to lead a normal life, not to mention the fact that to have children. Robert Cohn, rich poor talented writer, short- lover Brett pursues its endless harassment. Living in Paris in the company held an international creative and tourist bohemia. After a while, Jake Barnes, his friend, the American writer Bill Gorton, Brett Ashley with her fiancé Michael Campbell and Robert Cohn go to the fiesta in Pamplona, but on the way Jake and Bill devote a few days fishing in Burguete . In Pamplona, when the big folk festival is nearing its end, Bret converges for a short time with a nineteen matador Pedro Romero. Con leaves, and soon, when the fiesta ends, all the rest are leaving too, and Jake has to fetch Brett in Madrid. We parted with the heroes of the novel at a time when they will start the return journey to Paris.
The novel is constructed as a set of separate episodes, each of which is quite important, but just as it was in the collection of stories, almost all of the little episodes that have a particular value , easily summarized in two large pictures , with a significant interlude and a bit of an epilogue after the second one. The first picture shows a false , fake " Carnival" in Paris , during which a tangle day and night , brandy wine , trifling with serious , but in general the situation develops , allowing at least for a time to break away from the "damned " issues , to hide in the bustle of everyday life from the world and itself. Of all the characters in the novel perhaps only Jake Barnes cannot and does not want to merge completely with the crowd, feverish gaiety, which vividly recalls feast during the plague. However, if Jake is not fully into the party, and then separated from its members - in any case, some of them do not end up too.
A long way, done by the characters of the novel, is like a meaningless rotation in a vicious circle. From the very beginning of the novel, the reader feels that it deals with the tragedy of the world, due to World War II. We have seen that the presence of drama defined only in the third chapter (and the reasons for it is in the fourth chapter, where Jake talks about the nature of his injury), but the most important opposition Jake Barnes, Robert Cohn begins with the first words and is highly significant.
