I am writing to request to be reinstated within the U.S. I first came into the US in July 2009, when I was on an F-1 student status. I attended the Mercersburg Academy which was a one month program over the summer. Following this I enrolled in the Gould Academy in September and then progressed to Northeastern University in 2011.
I fell out of status in the fall semester of my freshman year at university. This was mainly down to a mistake made by both myself and one of my professors. In the first semester, I was struggling to adapt to the pressures of the course. I approached my academic advisor but she had many students waiting for her help and, therefore, I confided in one my tutors instead. The professor in question suggested that I drop a class so that instead of taking 13 credits for the semester, I only take 9. This was so that I could concentrate on achieving well in my remaining classes while also relieving the stress from myself. However, there was a problem in that neither myself or my professor was aware that I was under obligation to do 12 or more credits every year. It was my responsibility to know this, of course but, regrettably, I overlooked it.
There were circumstances beyond my control that resulted in my falling out of status. I was experiencing severe stress in trying adapt to college life as it was very different from high school. Furthermore, I missed the orientation at the beginning of the course, due to financial restraints, and so I missed the session where other international students were informed they had to take at least 12 credits per semester.
I am desperate to continue my studies in the U.S. I love Northeastern University and feel ready to concentrate and improve my grades. I have 17 credits planned for spring semester and am confident that, given the opportunity, I can do well.
