The person of God has remained to be a major topic of discussion among Christian and non-Christian believers. This has also caused division in churches where some believe that the trinity does not divide God while others believe that does. The fact is that the bible is clear about the nature of God, which has been unveiled to man in three forms, God the father, the son and the Holy Spirit. This majorly because of the different dispensation of the Christian faith which required God to show His closeness to man in different forms. Various terms are used to define the nature of God in line with the trinity.
Subordination is a term used to imply that, in the trinity, God is above the son and the Holy Spirit, which means that they are not the same. Modalism, on the other hand, is a belief that, there is no difference between God the father, the son and the Holy Spirit. They are therefore, the same; just that God manifested himself differently. Tertullian is remembered as one of the first writers of Christianity, which has made such writings, be referred to by the same name. He is believed to have first come up with the trinity word and used it much in his writings and teachings. Origen was also a Christian writer who was respected for his teachings on Christianity. His teachings accompanied practical lessons that he acquired from his father. However, he was found controversial especially when he started dwelling subordination, which was considered to be contrary to biblical teachings.
The council of Nicaea was one amongst the first gathering of priests that was approved by the Catholic Church. Its main responsibility was to teach the church on doctrine and explain the relationship of the Son God and the God Father. After the first council of Nicaea, there was Council of Constantinople, which was a gathering of bishops. Among other sundry responsibilities, they approved the Nicaea creed that came up during the first gathering of Nicaea.
Arian was a Presbyterian priest who stood firm against Trinitarian Christology, and insisted that God was above the son as highlighted in the trinity. The controversy that surrounds the person of God has made many theologians carry out a research on the topic. This has been considered the most misunderstood topic in Christianity yet it plays an important role in understanding Christianity. In the bible, we are told of three important periods of Christianity where God manifested His power to his people. This was in line and accordance to the beliefs of the time even as God purposed to grow more intimate with a man despite the several occasions that he disobeyed him.
In the Old Testament, we are told of great servants of God such as Abraham, Moses and Abraham, who talked with God face to face. This was because of the obedience and trust they showed towards God and the fact that they were considered the perfect tools through which God could speak to His people. Even though God desired to talk to His people directly as observed in the story of Moses, the people did not feel comfortable due to the sins they had committed against him. They hence preferred a mediator of which God ordained in his perfect time. In the New Testament, God had a different plan of salvation to His people. It should be noted that the more the populations of the world increased, the more sin was evident among His people. Many times, God got angry with the man, yet he remembered that it was all His creation.
The assumption that God lived in the higher places and never understood the issues that man went through, he came to the people in the form of a man. The best way was to be born normally, and live like other human beings. This would prove to men that He is well aware of the challenges they go through, yet it is possible for them to live a righteous life. After living such a life, God felt the need of being even closer to man by not just living among them as one of them, but rather within them as their strength and helper. This followed the promise of a helper, the Holy Spirit, which was manifested days after the resurrection of Christ. This implied that God would no longer be far and that whoever believes in Him, will receive divine strength that will ensure they overcome the temptations that come.
One of the reasons why most people believe God is three is because of the rigid belief of heaven where God stays. Early Christian teachings that emphasize on a safe place where God dwells and only issuing commands to man have made most them believe that there is a bigger God and other forms under him. The other reason lies on the fact that Jesus, in many occasions, stated that the father sent him. This has made many believers feel that even Jesus himself recognized the fact that there was a God higher than he was. The other issues also lies on the fact that even though Christians are filled with the Holy Spirit, they still have to seek some intervention either directly from God or through Jesus. It becomes difficult to explain to people that God is not in some faraway place but right within them. It was even difficult for Jesus to convince people that he was the father, which led to his crucifixion.
