The Vagina Monologues: A Response Paper Article Review Examples

The Vagina Monologues, a play by Eve Ensler, revolves around the various experiences a woman undergoes, including love, hate, feminism, violence against women, menarche, pregnancy, orgasm, sexual abuse, and the female sex organ itself, among others. It is a response to women's issues about their bodies, whether it is in relation to fear, self-consciousness, or acceptance. Through the play, women openly discuss about the issues that bother them as well as show support on matters that they believe in.
In the past, women were hesitant about discussing their own sexuality in fear of being judged and labeled promiscuous and immoral. However, The Vagina Monologues changed all that from a silent culture that considers female sexuality as a taboo topic into a culture of acceptance and strength. Each monologue represents a phase in a woman's life, while at the same time, chronicling the stages that define a woman.
I felt a strong connection to the play considering that there were issues that made me understand what makes a woman different from a man such as the topics on sex and birth. As women use sex as a way to feel connected to their partners, it is also a strong indication of how much love they are capable of giving their partners by exposing their innermost emotions through the sexual act. It also gives me a deeper appreciation of what mothers are capable of giving, including the dangers they put themselves in when they give birth to their children.
However, although it gave me a better feeling about the female gender, it also gave me some disturbing thoughts about men in general, as the play portrays them as singularly obsessed with sex, including how much they objectify the female organ. In addition, as the play entertained and enlightened me with the smart and cocky lines written specifically for the play, it further boosted my sense of freedom when it comes to self-expression and understanding about the human body and women in general.
As a whole, The Vagina Monologues is an eye-opener for women as it attempts to inspire and inform about the female sexuality and that issues one woman feel are also felt by other women. It also pushes women to action to change their self-perception and begin the road to self-awareness and self-acceptance.
