The benefits of education are various and to be treasured. As the original Latin meaning
indicates, it involves a ‘bringing up’, a growing. I can attest to this when I reflect on my own
educational experience and what it has meant to me.
Throughout the course of my life, I can see a progression as I moved from grade to grade
and level to level of education. I attended Boston Public School for eight years and there learned
not only basics but the importance of civic values and respecting others. These lessons in self-
development continued in High School. While my knowledge base was expanding I began to
appreciate the wider world and that I had an important place in that. These ‘lessons’, the results
of experience, I later endeavoured to share with others. As a consequence, I took an associates
degree at Bunker Hill Community College that qualified me to work as an assistant at Grebler
Community Centre for children with behavioural problems.
The attention and consideration these children required and patience I developed to
help them, in turn helped me, for I was undergoing a divorce from my spouse and
supporting our five children. I used what I had learned about different learning and mental
abilities to help my former spouse raise our children. This was a difficult period in my life
but what I had learned in my studies and in applying them helped me through it.
When the Centre closed I worked full time as a tutor at Thoreau Elementary School with
children with learning disabilities. I now paid greater attention to cognitive development and
began to realize just how much my acting as a role model helped them develop as people. I
treasure those years and the friendships I developed with my students. Through this experience I
recognized mistakes I had made at the Centre, and grew further as a person.
The commute back and forth between Concord and Boston led me to retire. I was
dissatisfied with my situation because I love and enjoy working with children and helping
them find positive support outlets so they can mainstream into life and the greater world.
Without judging, I love seeing them develop strong self-worth, confidence, and to encourage
and help them fulfill their dreams through their accomplishments. By so doing they will fully
accept themselves and others as they are. These are the true benefits of education; to realize
The reasons I wish to attend Cambridge College are various. I want to continue to gain
knowledge within the ever-developing area of education and to utilize it to help children who
have needs, so that they can see that there are people who care. My previous experience, in
studies, my family, the classroom, and in life has prepared me to progress further along my path
of personal development: now is the time I can fulfill my goals by continuing my education. This
is something I personally have always wanted to accomplish so I can give back to the
community, for others have given so much to me.
they. So it is with great hopes that I wish to achieve my Bachelors in Early Education. This will
enable me to employ skills and knowledge to overcome shortcomings in the educational system.
this journey, is that life itself is the learning experience, for all of us.
