The fourth chapter of the book Deep Economy: The Wealth of Communities and the Durable Future by Bill McKibben from pages 137 to 142 highlight some of the procedures that can be taken by the government in utilizing local resources. As the author points out, there is a need to realize that there is much about the countries local economy which can only be revived if they realized the potentials that lay within the country. The main reason why the country suffers economically is mainly because there is a lot spent on importation of raw materials and finished goods. The main issue is that the country has not ventured much into local production. As the country grows, there is an increase in populating which is also raising the standards of living. There is hence a need to maximize on production and reduce on the expenses. One of the most perfect ways of accomplishing this is by utilizing the available resources.
Even though the author has strong points and ideas, we realize that there is much to a country than is just the economy. In as much as a lot will be minimized in terms of resources when local facilities are utilized, there is the issue of over utilizing the resources and ultimately causing a strain on the environment. The more the establishment of industries, there is pollution and a need for more space which is already minimal. There are issues raised in the chapter which should go beyond being theoretical to practical. It is not always easy to transform an idea into practical which the author may have overlooked. However, if some of the ideas mentioned such as minimizing on the import of finished goods, it will go a long way in ensuring that the country lives in accordance with its means and hence making life simpler for the people.
