This video is about the rapid change the world has experienced as a result of globalization. Thomas l. Friedman explores this topic on the causes that have led to the gradual flattening of the world. In flattening of the world he really means leveling of operations in the corporate world.
Friedman envisages three phases of globalization while we are living in the third phase. These phases of globalization made the flat world progressively possible. The first two phases I (from 1492 to early 1800s) and phase II (from 1800 onwards), involved countries and their governments working towards global convergence, while the next phase of globalization was driven by the multinational companies. Present globalization has literally leveled the world by annulling the geographical boundaries in a multifaceted web of business relations where workers from typists and call center executives to more skilled workers from India and China work for such multinational companies as Microsoft and Dell. In view of the latest globalization, this has to a large extent been made possible by high-level communication powered by the internet.
- Fall of Berlin wall in 1989, - represented the breakdown of the East-West global barrier
- Netscape going public in 1995 - created the dotcom boom leading to global connectivity and convergence via optical fiber cables.
- The creation of workflow software – enabled the companies to communicate within and across the companies leading to yet higher level of connectivity, communication and productivity.
In light of these developments as articulated by Friedman, it is paramount that competitiveness is emphasized in training of workers to adequately compete in a global pool of talent. Learning and analyzing the goings on the global platform is crucial to understanding in which areas to concentrate on. We are compelled to expand our focus and energies on to a global market where our usefulness is gauged on our ability to function on as many locations as possible. Our lives stop being guided by where we were born or where we are living, but rather we become true global citizens living and working for the world.
