The field of Civil Engineering deals with the design considerations, actual construction and maintenance of both man-made and naturally built structures and environment. Most people perceive Civil Engineering as that subject whose focus is limited to only buildings and roads. In fact, there are a lot more: from roads, tunnels, canals, bridges, retaining walls, highways, dams, industrial plants, airports, water and wastewater treatment, oil refineries, just to mention a few. All these parts require expertise in Civil Engineering. Undergraduate education in this field provides all the basic subjects that every student is expected to be conversant with. They include: fluid mechanics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, college mathematics (differential equations, vector calculus and linear algebra). Civil Engineering filed specialize further into a wide range of branches such as surveying, Highway Engineering, Water and waste water engineering, soil mechanics, Construction planning/materials, structural analysis, design of steel and concrete structures etc. By having lots of these sub-disciplines enables me to choose an elective that most interest me.
The future is bright for me as a Civil Engineer-to-be. The discipline prepares me for work in a range of sectors, specifically the construction industry, on related structures such as buildings, roads, large structures etc. I can equally be employed with those firms engaged in production, storage and distribution of water, electricity, gas or petroleum. This wide range of employment opportunities will allow me to gauge whether to work with contractors, consultancies, national or multinational firms. Again, these opportunities are available both locally and overseas. My top three likes within my field falls in the sub-discipline of Roads/Highway construction, Soil mechanics and surveying. The concerns associated with this field relates to versatility of work, possibility of working across the globe, creative problem solving, and a mix of attention to detail and the big picture. Therefore, as a student, my main focus at the moment is to dedicate myself to achieve the best in my studies to realize the best that the future will offer.
