The yellow paper is a story that is usually said to be horror. This is due to the mistreatments that were accorded to the women during the period. The fact that people see the mistreatments being abnormal makes the people to refer the stories as being a horror. Gothic on the other hand is a story that combines both matters relating to romance and horror. Most of the characters in the story have the characteristics of horrors. What the stories show is that the women were taken to be the weak creatures during the period when the stories were written. They were at the same time required to play their roles as women and caretakers of children and this is why the stories mix romance and horror (Perkins, 75). Some of the mistreatments given to women during the period in America are that they would be left indoors the whole day. They were not allowed to even see their own children. In addition, the women were not allowed to do the work of their choice. This shows both horrific features due to the mistreatment of the women and the romantic roles that women were required to play.
Roman fever represents a period when the rights of the minority group in the American society had begun to be respected. This includes the poor, black Americans and the women. It is around the end of the 19th century that the women got their liberty. Civil rights respect was greatly emphasized at the period. The men realized that the women had other roles to play in the development of the country. This is when women were now allowed to work far from their homes. Despite doing the domestic chores, the women participated in the development of the country through working in the sectors in the economy. The men also started assisting in the domestic chores. Edith Wharton painted pictures that represented women who had no say in the community. They looked sad and abandoned. On the other hand, roman fever was describing a change in the society. It shows a time when the civil rights of all the people had started to be observed and especially those of the women.
The book The passing of grandison is written is satirical and comical way to pass a message to the readers. The use of humor is intended to criticize the slave ownership in America and the discrimination that the black Americans were accorded (Charles, 40). The general public is able to see the need to avoid slavery in America because at the end of the story, the story clearly shows that the writer was playing a trick to the reader and not the slave playing trick to the master. The word passing in the story represents the fact that grandison acts as if he is a white. It shows that he is a master of the slaves and his characters reflect how the masters treat their slaves. In the real sense, the grandison was a slave.
