Indeed, alcohol and drug abuse are common issues confronting teenagers, especially college going students across the globe. Different researchers have had varied perspectives regarding drug and alcohol abuse among college students. In this article, the authors evaluate the scope of the problem, including the increased risk among first-year students. They identify and discuss some of the possible interventions and outline examples of programs that policy makers and professionals can employ to help students to transition from high school to college life (DeJong and Ross, 2008).

In this article, the authors examine some of the issues related the increasing rates of drug abuse and alcoholism among college students, especially first years. Nevertheless, irrespective of the fact that the first-year students are at a crucial risk period, few college alcohol and drug prevention programs target students who are at this critical transition stage. According to the authors, overlooking some of the issues and challenges confronting first-year students has immense costs (DeJong and Ross, 2008).
According to the authors, some of the approaches that can be used to address the problem include bolstering the development and enforcement of policies regarding drug and alcohol abuse. Furthermore, marketing and promotion of alcohol to underage drinkers should be banned. They also suggest that high-risk promotions should be prohibited. The authors also reiterate that parents play a crucial role in the development of students; therefore, they should be actively involved in the alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs in colleges (DeJong and Ross, 2008).

Alcohol and drug abuse is a serious problem among college students, especially among first-years who are still establishing their identities. Most students drink to relieve stress, relax, to have fun, and to fit in amongst their peers. I believe that addressing the issue of drug and alcohol abuse among college students is challenging because college managements are always unwilling to be part of the solution. Parents and guardians also play a crucial role in the proliferation of the issue because they are the ones that provide their children with the funds that they use to purchase drugs and alcohol.
