Introduction
Terrorism are acts of violence that are committed by groups that perceive themselves as having been deceived by some eminent historical wrong. A terrorist group stage unforeseen attacks on civilian targets with the aim of sowing fear and perplexity. The groups normally do not have a formal connection with the government but it receives both moral and financial support from sympathetic governments.
Question 1
Arundhati Roy says that most of the terrorist attacks that have costed many lives and massive loss of property is sue to the war for power. Groups and governments are struggling to get power and the war against terrorism will never succeed. Any individual that tries to give their views on terrorism is branded as an “antinationalist”. Governments promise to offer democracy to the people but at the same time their efforts infringe negatively on the rights of the citizens. ‘’ have been uprisings, wars, intifadas. Tens of thousands have lost their lives. Accords and treaties have been signed, ceasefires declared and violated. But the bloodshed doesn't end’’ (Arundhati, 2012).
The American government stages a war against terrorism with an aim of providing a peaceful life to the Americans. It uses all weapons within its rich to combat the crime. This is a clear misuse of power by this government. It does not take time to consider the reasons behind the terrorist attacks but blindly suppress it. This has made life very hard for the Americans since any attempt to talk about terrorism might lead to extermination. This is a clear violation of the citizens’ right to freely express their opinions. ‘’ Donald Rumsfeld said that his mission in the War against Terror was to persuade the world that Americans must be allowed to continue their way of life. ..the American way of life is simply not sustainable. Because it doesn't acknowledge that there is a world beyond America” ( Arundhati, 2012).
The writer condemns terrorism. It is a war for power but it is the helpless and innocent citizen that suffers most due the attacks. Governments should be cautious in fighting terrorism and grant citizens the opportunity to give their views on the matter. It is through this way that the war against terrorism shall bear fruits. The writer brings to our attention the adverse effects of terrorism and how governments have used ineffective methods to fight it.
Question 2
Terrorism is a crime against humanity. It has dare consequences and must be fought at all costs. It has costed the lives of innocent people, destroyed properties worth millions of dollars, caused unnecessary tensions, poverty and interstates conflicts. It has derailed the economic, social and political development in the world. For instance the 11th September attack brought massive destruction in the US. Nations should look for the most effective way of fighting this crime.
Question 3
I agree with the writer that terrorism is a current problem that is facing the world and it must be fought. Loosing innocent lives hurts most. However, governments should not allow individuals to openly discuss the issue of terrorism or propose ways of combating it since this will lead to delay in action and as such more lives will be lost. Also, the same citizens have the ability to organize terrorism attacks hence any of their moves should closely be monitored. If citizens are given a chance to propose ways of fighting terrorism, their views may bring further complications that will worsen the problem.
Conclusion
Terrorism is one of the major themes that Arundhati Roy discusses. Roy condemns terrorism due to its effects on individuals, nations and the whole world. However governments should exercise high level of freedom and wisdom in fighting it. Roy brings to our attention that terrorism is becoming a major challenge and efforts and resources needs to be directed to the fight against it.
