Looking into Moloch’s article, it is clear that the two authors try to illuminate the differences that lie between place and other commodities used in transactions. The article also analyses the people reception of place as a commodity. This place as a commodity after passing through the hands of different entrepreneurs and government regulations become modernized. In short, the authors try to relate modernization and place business or how place business results in modernization.
Closely wound to the same idea is Jameson’s article on post modernism. The article appears to explain the aftermath of place business. The entrepreneurs invest in a place increasing its economic value and the place finally becomes modernized. This process of modernization can be viewed as a result of internalization of places as commodities thus for a place to earn more than another, it has to have some special features compared to others. The specialty of the place coupled with parody and pastiche results in post modernization. Therefore, Jameson’s article can be viewed as a continuation of Moloch’s article and idea.
Turning to Jean’s article, it focuses on hypermarkets, their operation modes, location and importance. The first mental image that a person gets (reception) when he/she reads the article is the location of a hypermarket and which type of lifestyle is associated with it. To start with, a hypermarket is always strategically located so as to serve the consumers efficiently, maximize on profit or even security reasons. This in turn produces a post-modern mental image where all these services are available. This article compared to Moloch’s article is a classic example of defining and showing post modernism. Thus the plot of the critique flows smoothly with each article being more specific than its predecessor.
Analyzing Harvey’s article, he seeks to answer the question ‘in which ways does nature dominate human life?’ the article explains the important things that one requires to know so as to realize nature’s dominance over human life. He seeks to explain emancipation and self-realization which should enlighten a person on how to view domination of nature. Considering originality and focus on the main topic, the author uses examples and citations from other writings. This gives the article some originality that is much descriptive and evidenced. On reception, the topic is well elaborated but relating to the current issues is the problem. Trying to employ it in the current world can be rather hard since everything appears to be commercialized.
The articles’ connectivity and coherence in plot or subject matter is much smooth. The articles especially those by Moloch, Jameson and Jean seem to depend on one another for continuity and full meaning as well as illustration. Harvey’s article comes in as an explanation of how to approach post-modernism. The article explains that everything has to start from the brain with self-realization and emancipation to thinking of how to develop places so as to meet the needs that we have as human beings.
In conclusion, the articles form a pyramid structure describing post modernism and its effects by considering their contents. Moloch’s article forms the base (foundation of post-modernism), Jameson’s article follows (post-modernism and its reception by people), Jean’s article piles on top of Jameson’s (a feature associated with post-modernism) and the tip is Harvey’s article which is an extract from the book ‘Justice, Nature and Geography of difference’ and in itself explains trends in post-modernism.
