There Is Nothing Wrong With You: Going Beyond Self-Hate is a book written by Cheri Huber. Huber explores and reveals the origin of self-hate, how it works, and how the readers can identify with it. In addition, the author gives tips on how one can go about self-hate. Cheri Huber discusses the different forms of self hate and how it can take control of people’s lives; nonetheless, she gives out a solution to self hate. According to Huber, some statements can be self-destructive, for instance, “You have been taught that there is something wrong with you and that you are imperfect, but there isn’t and you’re not” (Huber 4). For Cheri, this is not true and we should not let it eat our minds and bring self-hatred but we should work on believing in ourselves and believe that we are better. Cheri Huber talks about self-hate, how it works, and how to overcome it. Self hate is when one dislikes oneself or just hating oneself. It is important to learn that, our happiness comes from within, and not from what other people think about us.
Self hate is an inside problem that many people have faced. It is a pervasive problem hat affects most relationships and how people look at themselves with denigration. Huber explains to the readers how self-hate works in our lives, and how we can let it go. The author writes how people live with self-hatred as they always focus on what is missing in their lives, and what is wrong with them. According to Huber, people put weight on what they think is wrong with them instead of focusing on the best things life gives them. The author insists that, we should treat ourselves in the right way and believe in who we are instead of self-hating on what people say about us. Huber writes "At some point, now or later, you're going to have to risk being you in order to find out who that really is. Not the conditioned you, not the "you" you've been taught to believe you are, who you really are" (Huber 125). She insists that, people end up hating their lives because of what people think they are, for instance, people might say you are obese because you are overweight, for Huber, it is vital to look on the positive side from what people think and stop self hatred.
Self hate comes when people talk ill about others for instance; one is not good enough for a certain task. According to Cheri Huber, people end up hating themselves because of how they are branded by others, and this affects their lives. Furthermore, because they have negative thoughts in mind, they end up treating themselves in the wrong way. Cheri insist on this point when she writes “If you had a person in your life treating you the way you treat yourself, you would have gotten rid of them a long time ago” (Huber 79). It is important to learn to treat ourselves in the right way because, if an outsider treats us the way we treat ourselves, we can end up continue hating ourselves plus the other person. Cheri points out that, meditation and self-awareness are imperative in such situations because they will help us discover the inner us and learn to treat ourselves in the right way (Huber 220). Through meditation, on is able to hear what he/she tells her/himself and it become clear in the mind thus the change commences in our lives and we stop the self-hatred.
Cheri Huber insists that, self –hatred begins at childhood with the simple things we hear from parents or the people around us. Therefore, it is important to ignore such statements “Will you ever learn. You should be ashamed of yourself. Are you ever going to get it” (Huber 12). After ignoring this, we will be able to overcome self-hatred or else such statements are self-destructive and can lead to suffering and depression in our later years. Our parents and the society might demand a lot from us, and if we fail to meet their demands, they make us hate who we are. Huber suggests that, this is wrong and we should not let this make us hate ourselves because no one is perfect and that does not give us any reason to hate who we are. Moreover, she teaches that, we should practice unconditional love and true self in order to recover from self hatred. We should learn that, our happiness lies within us, and we should work towards becoming happy in life and evade what other people think about us.
