Workshop Summary
This workshop provides awareness regarding the behavior required at a workplace which a student does not learn in college. The college environment and the work environment are different and this workshop teaches the ways to portray ourselves at workplace. Working in a practical environment with people of different nature can be very challenging along with meeting the needs of the company. The workshop emphasizes on the benefits of thinking on higher levels, and thinking out of the box to deal with different people and accomplishing the tasks at a workplace. Thinking on a higher level, having a receptive attitude to learn from the peers or supervisors, completing the assigned tasks on time, respect towards your colleague, being ethical and professional, time management are some basic requirements that must be followed at the workplace. The speaker also emphasizes that thinking unconventionally and in a different perspective makes our presence at the workplace valuable and people look at us with respect. Can the individual perform the assigned task? How does an individual accept the task? Does the individual understand the tasks properly and work diligently towards achieving it in the allotted time? These are a few questions answered in this workshop.
Practical Application
Any work can be accomplished by working religiously towards it. Accounting is a field that is dominated by male, and expectations towards employees in the finance domain in the organizations are higher. The workplace consists of various people who think on different levels, though everyone works towards achieving the goals of the organization. The behavior of a person is noticed in all aspects and the way a person carries an attitude matters the most. There are lots of challenges in Accounting and an individual is required to be completely responsible towards the task assigned. There is no harm in learning from a male or a female supervisor and there should be any irrational behavior while learning from them. An person who completes the work on time, communicates and interacts well with the peers and supervisors, does not badmouth on the colleagues, lower, middle and higher management, builds trust in others by being professional, provides instant solutions to any problems, demonstrates good ethics and principles, performs extremely well in all tasks, supports the team in all difficulties as a good team member, and is conscious about the surrounding at the workplace is considered valuable and an asset to the organization.
Personal Impact
The workshop provided me an opportunity to learn about the expectations on an individual by an organization. When applying for a job I would highlight my communication and technical skills. Now, I am aware that there are like-minded or tough people to handle in a team and it is a vital task to deal with everyone. I am kind to everyone and it is an advantage to me at the workplace, though I have to cautious not to break any rules set forth by the organization as I understand that people will notice me and my behavior in the initial stages of building my career. I have to gain the trust of people around me to make myself valuable to the organization. Any task assigned to me must be completed according to the deadlines or I may be at risk to lose my credibility. I am glad to know that hard, sincere and ethical work is noticed and rewarded in the company, and I would go up the ladder by performing up to the expectations, rather than asking a favor or blowing the whistle on others. Learning from a male or a female supervisor is not an issue to me.
