Thesis
Principal Arguments
The first principal argument in this article is that CBC has been used by the government of Canada to inform Canadians on matters of national interest. As a state controlled media house, CBC has been instrumental in promoting nationalism. In order to explain their points, the authors emphasize that the Canadian government has been involved in media. Meaning, they have been collaborating in most of the issues. Thus, CBC is provided with funds to enable it to discharge its duties without many problems.
Besides, the authors argue that several attempts have been made to ensure to use the media to unite Canadians. Through the CBC, a lot of programs have been launched to bring people together. As the authors examine, the major breakthrough was realized after the introduction of the Dominion Day. This was an annual celebrations aimed at instilling the spirit of nationhood on the Canadians. It was felt that the organization of such ceremonies would help in binding the nation together. Because of its usefulness, the government decided to liaise with CBC to air live broadcasts for these events. Obviously, such holidays are very prominent in promoting national pride. It is one of the few opportunities that the Canadians got to be together.
Consequently, CBC has been instrumental in fostering national identity. In deed, nationalism is essential for the success of any country. As the authors explain, the media can play an integral role in creating a sense of national identity. Actually, the incorporation of the CBC in the organization of the Canadian Day celebrations was a noble idea. Since the government had realized the influential role of media in the society, it was a wise decision to involve it in the planning of such celebrations. The airing of live variety shows would not only create a sense of national pride, but also enhance the spirit of nationality. The shows brought together a lot of artists from all corners of the nation. Thus, they made the Canadians feel represented and entertained whenever the celebrations took place. This is the only way through which the media can get a chance to disseminate information to the general public and inform them about the importance of patriotism and unity.
Lastly, the authors emphasize that the kind of support given to CBC is a healthy one. It is a noble idea to come up with events to unite all the people regardless of their social, religious, geographical, cultural or ethnic origin. The authors are right for suggesting that media is necessary for uniting the nation. Despite its absence in the better parts of 1980s, the Canada Day variety show was a very useful occasion in the history of the nation. It made all the Canadians to speak with one voice and be proud of their country. After all, the event brought artists from all the parts of the country to represent their people.
