Every moment brings a new experience in ones life. Such experiences either make one feel devalued or more valued. I fondly remember an instance when I was in class together with my fellow classmates waiting for the lecturer to arrive and continue with the day’s lecture. It was a mathematics lecture. Like any other lecture, everybody was busy trying to find a solution to a quiz that we had been assigned during the previous lecture. Never before had anyone seemed so keen to find a solution to a take-away quiz and especially a difficult like that one. The reason behind our commitment to find the solution was anchored to a promise the lecture had assured anyone who was to find the correct solution. The promise was a free sponsorship ticket to math’s symposium.
Minutes before the lecturer checked in, an idea hit my mind; the quiz was similar to another he had assigned us during an introductory lesson in the previous semester. I took a deep sigh and everybody stared at me, I raised my eyes to the roof and everybody followed suit as if the solution was inscribed up there.
I held my pen steadily and scribbled a long formula on the paper and in less than four minutes I shouted Eureka! “What have you found?” The lecturer asked as he entered through the rear door of the lecture room. “The answer to yesterdays take away quiz”, I replied with an accurate voice. “If your answer is zero the ticket is yours”, the lecturer replied with a sharp smile.
The lecturer headed to the blackboard and started solving the quiz. It took him twenty minutes to arrive to the zero answer. Noticing it had taken so long for him to arrive at the solution, I raised my hand and requested him to allow me introduce a new and shorter way of solving the problem.
I did the quiz in less than two minutes and arrived at the answer. Every body went silent and the lecturer said, “You’re an efficient mathematician”. Everybody clapped and I smiled back at them. The lecturer appointed me the class representative and I humbly accepted the position. I won the ticket to the educative math’s symposium and later came to share the experience of the event with my fellow classmates.
