Discussion Questions
On Tatum page 2, the decision makers he described did not want to invest time or money resources in any larger conversations about race in schools. This leads to the question; does the lack of commitment of resources from the decision makers play a part in widening the achievement gap?
On Tatum page 5, “by the end of the nineteenth century; American concern about immigration was growing, fueled by fears that a large percentage of the new arrivals were mentally deficient.” This leads to the question; do the decision makers in the country ignore the achievement gap because of the 1882 congress law?
On Tatum page 11, “well-entrenched assumptions about intelligence and racial and ethnic stereotypes do not just influence teacher behavior they also impact student behavior over the years of their schooling.” My question is; does the stereotype affect the actual performance of the colored students in the country?
Chapter 8 page 148, ‘I had come to care about the low-income youth I interviewed.” Does the researcher conduct a true and fair research as she admits having sympathy for one of the variables in the research?
Chapter 8 page 149, “this is something she did not tell peer about because it was not cool to study. It seems that it was best to be seen as someone who was naturally smart, which meant that you got good grades without trying or caring.”
Chapter 8 page 150, I knew child protection services had been involved with mike a few years earlier when he and his mother were had been severely beaten by his father. Does lack of good parent influence from the low income society affect the grades of the children at school?
