Thoughts On Atheism Essay Examples

Resulting from the debate featured in the videos, I believe atheism can be defined in terms of two major aspects: the way atheism approaches the concept of death and the way it explains the creation of the universe.
According to David Silverman, president of the American Atheists Organization, atheism is the absence of a belief in God, accompanied by an acknowledgement of death as a physical process that all human beings are eventually exposed to. Atheism does not view death as a possible gateway into a further spiritual and eternal life; on the contrary, for an atheist, death is nothing else than a natural process that all living beings succumb to. Atheism also claims that religion was created in order to help people understand and explain their mortality, but that does not prove its legitimacy.
Regarding the creation of the universe, David Silverman, as an atheist, believes in the fact that matter can appear from nothing (claim derived from certain scientific research) and that there is no superior creative force that has caused the Big Bang. However, I believe that throughout the debate, Silverman has done a poor job with developing this idea, as well as rebuttaling the arguments presented by Edip Yuksel. The latter claims that the universe has to have an underlying creative force because the world is very complex and governed by specific and constant physical laws, that had to be pre-programmed into the Big Bang in order to make the universe evolve the way it did. David Silverman has brought no significant arguments to infirm this idea. This is why I believe that atheism is simply the absence of the belief in religion as the true way to explain the creation of the universe, but it is not the absence of the belief in a certain creator (particle, element, non-matter) that could have produced the universe and the world we exist in. Atheism is a sort of skepticism towards dogma and religion’s ability to sustainably explain the world around us, but it is certainly not a complete denial of a possible creative force.
