Execution Quality
Assessing the project at its gate for their execution quality is very important. An analysis of execution quality helps to assess how viable and effective the strategy for carrying out the project is. It therefore provides an overview of the performance of the project. An example is at the IT Plan Evaluation stage where the resources required and analysis of the market is done. At this stage, if the execution quality is not examined, then the ability to mobilize resources or market feasibility results may be fundamentally flawed. This means that the overall efficiency of the project will be reduced and the project will either operate at reduced success rate or may fail.
Business Rationale
It is important that the business rationale is evaluated at the gates. The business rationale evaluates the capture, creation and/or delivery of value of the project. It is necessary that at each gate of the project, that stage is evaluated to ensure that it is still in compliance with the mission and motivation for the business. Evaluating the business rationale at the IT Project Portfolio 1 is vital because this stage evaluates the value of the project. If the project proceeds when it is not ready in terms of technological development, this will reduce the success and/or profitability of the project.
Action Plan
An action plan outlines the steps which are taken to ensure that the project is either completed or implemented. An action plan ensures that: the steps are well identified and defined; the steps are carried out within a set time framework; and that all necessary resources are available. At the IT Project Portfolio 2, the value chain partners have already been established. Lack of evaluation will lead to breakdown in the chain between the partners and smooth transition between projects will be compromised. This could jeopardize the outcome of the project.
