Goal-setting is often ignored as a wasteful exercise. Very few individuals realize the importance setting goals in life. Often, goal-setting is restricted to professional goals only. This is also not advisable. Denoting goals for oneself not only helps in establishing long-term vision but it also enables to gather short-term motivation (“Personal Goal Setting”). Therefore, I have decided to set goals for myself in all walks of my life: educational, professional and personal.
As a student, I have always valued academic excellence. Being considered as the cream of a batch or class is definitely a privilege. However, while I strongly believe that those at the top of the class manage to distinguish themselves, I also believe that average students are not to be ignored. I have seen several seniors who were average in college, but they are now successful in life. Therefore, I have not set this as my educational goal, that is, to be among the top three students. Rather, my goal in academics is to achieve a good position and then be able to stay consistent. I believe that learning to stay consistent will help me later on in life. However, consistency becomes desirable only when one achieves a good state of affairs.
Moreover, in terms of education, I want to learn about something more than my own field of study. For example, I want to learn more about English classic literature or maybe history. I want to explore more subjects in order to help widen my horizon. I do not want to ensnare my thinking in a small cage. I want to give my thoughts the choice of being free – away from the constraints of the syllabus and grading system.
In terms of profession, I want to be a professional who is not only committed to his/her work but is also committed to keeping his/her seniors as well as his/her juniors satisfied with his/her general behavior. Commitment to work is not difficult. However, accordingly adjusting one’s behavior at the office is a pretty difficult task. My goal is to keep myself from becoming so involved in work that I lose track of office activities. I want to groom my personality as a whole. In order to do that, I will have to learn to avoid office politics by maintaining congenial relations with all colleagues. Also, I am strongly committed to reaching the level of senior executives in a well-known company, without having to do or say yes to an unethical act.
Lastly, my personal goals include giving my parents every comfort in life once I stand on my own feet. In order to do that, I will also have to be obedient to them. Therefore, my personal goal fuels both my educational and professional goals. They are all inter-dependent. My personal goal is completely dependent on what I achieve in my academic and professional life. My success in academics will make my parents happy, and my professional success will help me fulfill their wishes.
Goal-setting in itself is not a difficult task. However, keeping these goals in focus at all times, and struggling to achieve them day and night requires relentless efforts and endless commitment. My goals are not rigid. They are flexible and susceptible to change as per my circumstances. However, I try to set a higher standard every time.
