Democracy is the form of government that is directly representative of people’s inspirations. It is a worldwide time tested and recognized form of government. Democracy in others words a name for a free society and free citizens within.
Democracy requires a mechanism under which the electable come to power and make use of the authority for the purpose of welfare of masses. This mechanism is possessed in form of voting. Voting is an organized and centralized method of election in the system of democracy. Two basic components that define democracy are freedom of expression and freedom to choose. Both these are served by the process of voting. Voting is the corner stone in the entire mechanism of democracy. Democracy without voting would be akin to a given day without the light and sun.
While democracy is a system in itself, voting is the tool that connects the system with the masses. It serves as a communicating element through which the citizens express their satisfaction or disapproval of the candidates. Abraham Lincoln quoted democracy as form of government that is of the people, for the people and by the people (Madeley, 71). All these three variables are subject to the opinion and expression of like or dislike of the common citizens. This feeling is expressed in power to vote.
Voting is a basic right endowed upon the free citizens in a democratic society. Without voting democracy may not exist. It is through the vote, that the citizens may hold the elected members responsible and determine their future course in the field of politics in times ahead. Voting gives every individual a right and power to decide about any individual or any representative group which they may feel would address their social concerns.
Another important factor served by the vote is the sense of equality amongst the citizens. Regardless of their social status or any other affiliation, each individual has only one vote and each has its own equal weight age. This function of voting power adds to the characteristics of democracy where every individual is equal before law and in terms of privileges enjoyed. It is the power of voting that people reject those who may stand against the prosperity of the people (Fervor, 237).
The voting power determines the future of the democracy and in return the future of the country and its citizens. Voting can be easily termed as the sole factor that puts democracy a side and ahead of other forms of governments in which there is slight cover over the authority and opinion of people with regard to the choice of elected members by its own people. Voting is a litmus test and a response to the performance of the predecessors against which the prior elected members are gauged and selected or rejected.
The vote of citizens is strong enough to enact the governmental pillar of politics for a period of four to five years. It is equally strong enough to allow the re election of the same members for the next run. The right to vote further helps defining the role of the grownups in a society allowing them to make decisions for the better future of their children hence more awareness all over. Abraham Lincoln whose contributions for democracy are noteworthy rightly said “Ballot is stronger than bullet” (Bingham, 263).
