Time wasting is one of the major challenges facing students in various universities. Although there are differences in each university, there are some time wasters that are almost universal in all university. These times wasters might be associated with the common nature of the universities and the common trends in technology that the whole world is experiencing. This paper analyzes some of the time wasters and their effects to the students in the university.
According to Boston University (n.d), internet surfing is one of the major university time wasters. The advancement in technology enables everyone with a smartphones to access intent everywhere every time. For this reason, many students find themselves spending too much time on the internet not necessarily doing beneficial work but doing other things that may not be connected to university work. In this category of time waster, the social medial takes the lead. Many spend a lot of time chatting on Facebook, twitters, posting photos on Instagram, WhatsApp chat, among others. In addition to this, students may waste a lot of time doing online gaming and at times watching pornographic materials. The internet usage does not only waste time but may lead to addiction that has negative effects on the individual. When one is addicted to internet surfing, the person may not concentrate on course work in the university and may be carried on in future if not taken care of (Texas State University, n.d). It is like any other addiction that does not go down easily.
The other major time waster in the university is procrastination. It is a fact that everyone at some point procrastinates for no good reason. Most of the time procrastination is made just because one does not want to want what one is supposed to do, or at least not when there is adequate time. Many university students pile work for weeks on end without taking care of the possible pressure the work may eventually bring. Due to this, the student panics in the last moment and works quickly resulting to poorly done work that result into poor grades. The poor grades discourages the student and leads to the other major time waster in the university; worrying.
In conclusion, since there are many time wasters in the university, it is upon individual students to take the necessary measures to ensure that they do not waste too much time. For example, one has to set their priorities right. Setting priorities makes one remain focused on the most important things. One may also set goals and objectives that one aspires to achieve during the university times. Such makes one remain focused on the finals results. In the event of internet addiction, there are programs that can help one deal with such challenges. It is better to act early, than be sorry in future.
