Introduction
Driveway design is an essential part of road traffic engineering as most of the traffic originates from the driveways of residences, businesses, or other connections to the road. Improper designs or unapproved designs of the driveway may lead to accidents or traffic hazards. In most of the cities, a driveway permit is required to be obtained from the respective traffic engineering department, where a traffic engineer might inspect the driveway that connects to the roadways or highways. Improper driveway designs have reportedly caused severe injuries across the world (Gattis et al., 2013). Most of the countries have their design requirements, and there is a global shift towards a design-oriented approach for traffic management with an aim towards road safety and pedestrian-sensitive design (Sokolow, Williams and Levinson, 2015).
Learning Objective
Through this study, I intend to achieve a thorough understanding of the traffic engineering with a focus on the driveway design. I will be performing a comparative study of driveway designs across all the countries and in different cities and the problems and issues that they solve.
Scoping
I will follow the following action steps to achieve my learning objectives.
Find a focus area and identify the learning objective.
Create milestones for completing the learning objective.
Identify sources of information and required resources to complete the objective.
Summarize and Capture the learnings in the form of a report.
Milestones
Summary of Required Resources and Guidance for further research
The initial direction of the identified focus area of study i.e. driveway designs in traffic engineering has been obtained by studying the works of Gattis and co- researchers (2013) and Sokolow and co-researchers (2015). Gattis and Sokolow’s work defined the direction and flow for the driveway design and its importance in traffic engineering.
The subsequent research would be performed on similar studies and the primary resources used for this purpose would be following
Reputed Journals
Blogs/websites of traffic offices or reputed organizations
Government studies/websites or publicly published information
Assumptions
It is assumed that I will have access to all the journals or studies that will be identified for completing the learning objective. I am assuming that I will be able to obtain relevant access through the support of my supervisor. The study would be performed based on secondary research and publicly available information. I will be able to achieve my milestones provided no other urgent work is assigned that would interfere with my work.
Evidence of achieving the said objectives
The following artifacts will be prepared that would act as evidence for the completion of my learning objectives.
Bibliography listing of all the identified knowledge sources in Havard format
A final report capturing the knowledge and learning obtained from the study
