Training and development is a necessary action that the human resources departments in many organizations undertake to improve the skills of the employees. This enhances not only productivity of the company, but also the employees’ motivation thus creating a positive company image. Organizations that have a positive public image are able to attract talent in the workforce. Training and development involve learning new methods of performing various activities. The managers can learn how to improve the performance of the organization through effective management of the workforce. Learning entails a process where people gain knowledge through experience. The learning cycle proposed by Kolb suggests that there are four stages of learning process. The steps include concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualization and active experimentation.
Concrete experience is the first phase in the learning process that involves learning from the way one relates to people and the particular experiences they go through. A presentation on how to help employees become successful managers is an example of a real learning experience since it covered fundamental areas in management. The personal leadership training in the presentation was very essential because it focused on the manager’s development needs. The program also aimed at training the audience on how to coach others. The topics of strategic thinking, change and support of organizational goals help the learners become better managers. Further, the learners are equipped with the skills on how to manage innovation as well as making sound decisions in the management and also how to manage the workforce in an organization. The program was aimed at enhancing the knowledge of managers to equip them with necessary skills to improve the effectiveness of their work. Effective management involves improving the performance of the organization through effective working of the employees. Managing the employees is significant in achieving the organizational goals.
Reflective observation is the next phase in learning where the learners get to know how things work by watching other people or by making observation about themselves. The training program presentation was an effective one since it defined the people who need to be trained and the topics they needed to be trained on. The observation that is likely to be made on the people who benefited from the presentation is a vast improvement on the way they relate with their employees. The managers will also be in a better position to understand change and encourage innovation in the workplace
Abstract conceptualization entails making deeper understanding of the observations made in the reflective observation. Management entails many functions that affect the day –to day running of organizations. One of the key functions of a manager in any organization involves dealing with employees. Establishing and maintaining a professional relationship with the employees can lead to the success of an organization. One of the ways to make the employees improve on their work is through training and development. Learning is a continuous process thus through training the employees they get to learn more about the organization operation and the expectations of the employees.
Active experimentation is a stage in learning that involves the use of the understanding gained from observations to solve a problem or to make a final decision. Before carrying out training and development, there is a need to assess the required training. The training should be able to benefit both the employees and the organization thus a thorough training need assessment need to be carried out. The analysis entails identifying the people to be trained, the areas to train them on taking into consideration the organizational goals. A cost-benefit analysis of the training has to be considered. The benefit that the organization gets from having trained the employees should be greater than the cost incurred in training the employees. The manager must be able to handle employees taking into consideration the labor regulations that govern a given country. The management must consider the various unique needs of the employees since all employees have different needs. Employees prefer a working environment that is conducive in terms of remuneration and working conditions. There should be a two-way means of communication between the employees and the management so as to obtain feedback from the employees. In addition, the management is able to give directions to the employees and assess the effectiveness of their directions.
In conclusion, the management needs personal leadership skills to be able to run the organization towards achieving its goals. The way the managers relate to their employees has an impact on the productivity of an organization. The managers need to be able to handle various complaints by the employees. The employee’s rewards should be based on merit to avoid issues of favoritism. Training and development initiatives should be carried out regularly in the organization to enhance learning. The feedback obtained on employee performance can be used to identify the training needs. However, the training needs must be identified first considering the cost benefit analysis of the training.
