TripAdvisor and other similar apps are products of IT industry but also mostly have influence on tourism industry. This segment is facing a number of opportunities. The driving force for all of them is “growing market with huge potential” (Karan), while higher number of reviews will promote the brand. It gets inspiration from its competitive force which is truly “revolutionary concept” which is proposed to user (Schaal). The key success factor is based on the idea that “mobile’ refers to the user, and not the device or the application” (Hylton).
These opportunities emphasize strengths this industry has. The most notable among them are “ease of development and faster and easy access to markets” (Karan) that prove the industry’s competence. Moreover, there are plenty of skilled developers who are ready to work on the product updating. Assessing from the other point of view, strengths of mobile application are “timely information and location-aware” (Hylton). They have direct connection to the key success factor defined above: everything must be done for the convenience of the customer.
According to Varshneya, there are three ways of making mobile application profitable. In order to achieve financial objective of getting money from building and moderating mobile apps, one can rely on “in-app revenue from free apps”, “paid revenues” and “in-app revenues from paid apps .“ At the same time, strategic objectives for mobile apps can be reached only when they are clearly defined. Tucker says that they can differ from a desire “to be seen as innovator” to “showing progress” that will overshadow competitors. Target audience is very important in strategic planning for mobile apps business.
