Becoming a businesswoman has always been my dream. My interest in trade first developed during the secondary school, when I would get student stationeries from a bulk-buying store for the cheap price and sell them to my fellows, receiving my money back with some extra profit. I was quite successful and decided to span my consumers. It soon escalated from my school friends being my only customers to their parents purchasing from me as well. Eventually, I started looking for other opportunities to earn profit, and thus began to sell home-made chocolate. I received plenty of orders, especially on Valentine’s Day. It boosted my self-esteem and despite of the fact that selling chocolates wasn’t as profitable as selling stationeries, I was happy that I could earn my own money at such young age and made my parents proud.
My dad, who became a successful businessman without a high-school diploma and who has always been my role-model, was really impressed by my mini-entrepreneurship and taught me how to keep a small accounting book, which stored the record of all the things I bought and the money I made. It demonstrated me the importance of keeping my business deals in order and being organized, which turned out to be of a great assistance later when my father asked me to make his company employees’ profile database during my summer break. I enjoyed being granted with his trust and dealt with this task with a great enjoyment. When I was about to graduate from high school, I, like the majority of other teenagers, was really confused about what to do with my life. I thought about going to China to learn the Chinese language at one point, which would have been very reasonable due to the fact that this language is extremely useful in doing business, given the reality of rapidly developing Chinese economy, and because of my half Chinese and Indonesian family roots. Looking back I understand that I was mislead by my adolescent hesitancy, because the cause that I finally realized was the only right to dedicate my whole life to had been around me since my childhood years. I made up my mind and decided to go to the United Stated to broaden my horizons in all senses and gain necessary knowledge for good performance in the world of business. I figured that international business relations is one of the most popular and profitable destinations in nowadays world, and given the fact that I was the daughter of a great businessman who navigated me through the peculiarities of this sphere in my early age, I was certain that I had made the right decision and have never regretted it since then.
I cannot overestimate the importance of the many things I have learned here and the significance of the experience I have gained. I joined Business Economics Accounting club in Foothill and was awarded to be the head of activities officer, with sharing my ideas and planning some activities for the club being my two main responsibilities. I will not be mistaken in saying that it is thankfully to that that I developed creative thinking and decision-making abilities. We discussed many business issues and investigated interesting cases with my teammates, and it showed me the magnitude of team work. Being the head officer of this club enabled me to be more self-assured as well as made me more competent in giving commands and taking responsibilities. I enjoyed what I did and it brought the pleasure even to some rather tiresome and ambiguous tasks.
As my father is getting older, I would really like to help him in continuing his textile garment business. I am very interested in the textile and I find it rather engrossing to find, model and explore different kinds of garment. My father is a rare example of the man who enjoys shopping, simply because he is interested to look at the materials of the garment and find out what is popular and fashionable at the moment. He is a very smart man, and I admire his dedication to his work. He showed me how important it is to enjoy what you do in life and I am grateful that I have such wonderful role model right before my eyes. I really believe that getting into University of California will help me to become successful and gain essential knowledge and competence to become a respectable successor of my father’s life work. I have always been determined and hard-working, and I am convinced that the university life with its challenges and inter-student competitions will help me to raise my standards and set a higher bar for myself, giving me an opportunity of coming to a whole new level and becoming a true professional in the field of business.
