In one of the episodes of Undercover Boss, the Systems and Finance Director of Hyundai Motors Ray Pope goes undercover to understand whether the business process and operations are in tandem with the company’s expected sales growth by almost 25% (Lambert, 2014). He visits the biggest company dock in the UK and also a distributor’s office to understand the efficiency of the current business systems and processes. From these two job roles have been selected for which the job analysis is provided as below. The first job is of the Supervisor in the docks who has to ensure that the systems of the organisation are working efficiently and the second one is of the sales executive who has to drive the sales growth reasonably.
Job position 1: Supervisor
In this specific job the employee is expected to manually check the newly imported cars and ensure that they are in perfect condition for delivery.
The employee must do a thorough check of the car for scratches, dents, engine and an overall monitoring to move the car to the next location.
Once the car is checked it has to be marked against the unique 17 digit vehicle identification number (VIN) that acts as the one of the quality measures.
Over 2500 cars are imported every week and the employee gets an average of 30 seconds to do the quick check. As the process is manual the employee must be extremely cautious about not making any errors that can lead to product failure in the market. This is directly related to customer experience.
Job position 2: Sales executive
In this role the sales executive are in direct interaction with the customers. The employee must keep a close tab of walk-ins and footfalls.
When a potential customer arrives the sales executive must quickly understand what kind of vehicle is being looked for and the employee must provide adequate vehicle details that will convince the customer to make the purchase.
The employee in this role must ensure that they possess all the technical details of the vehicles and not just pass on random or irrelevant details to the customer.
Since the job involves building rapport with the customer sales executive must have high communication and soft skills to understand the need of the customer and accordingly initiate the interaction.
Data collection:
Observation is understood to be a method of data gathering by looking through events, behaviour or making a list of physical characteristics in the natural environment (“Data collection”, 2008). Observation is a highly recommended method when the researcher is trying to understand a given situation that is happening or has already happened. It is also very useful when the researcher is trying to study the behaviour of the participants or even when the participants have little time to spare for other suitable methods such as interviews or surveys. In this particular case we have utilised unobtrusive observation where we simply watch the video and understand the jobs of the employees (Driscoll, 2011). The information is realistic as the data is collected from the documentary and then used and applied on need basis. The job analysis is clearly based on the details provided by the employees themselves which is also verified by the concerned team. The job roles described are then matched against the actuals and the physical environment of the working condition is also considered. The jobs are then also checked for the effectiveness and how they are influencing the productivity of the employees.
