Question 1
In the video “Giants upon the Skyline” their first major environmental concern is the environmental destruction by heavy metals in Murray city. The film provided a comprehensive overview of the structural destruction that has been caused by the heavy gases on environment (Murray, 2005).
Question 2
Murray is a city located in the core of Salt Lake valley in the state of Utah. The city began as an agricultural center, as a result of Salt Lake Valley, Murray evolved to an industrial community. The construction of the initial smelter occurred in 1869. The city and the smelter industry performed well until 1948 when many things changed. These changes occurred due high level of pollution of the environment by contaminated heavy materials such as arsenic and lead (Murray, 2005)
Question 3
Atmosphere is a layer of varied gases around the Earth. By volume, the layer is compost of 78.09% Nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.09% carbon dioxide and the rest are noble gases. Although the content of the atmospheric air varies by percentage, the three most important gases are Nitrogen, Oxygen and carbon-dioxide. Oxygen and carbon-dioxide are vital since they are required for survival of living organisms. They are required for gaseous exchange between fauna and flora (Greenhouse gases, 2012).
Question 4
Research analyses have discovered that the Ozone layer is relatively good at the upper atmosphere section than the ground level. Essentially, Ozone (O3) is a highly reactive and unstable form of oxygen. At the upper atmosphere, the Ozone layer occurs in small concentrations as compared to lower sections. At that portion, Ozone actively protects life by absorbing the ultraviolet lights particularly UVB radiations from the sun. These radiations are quite lethal and may cause cancer, cataracts or destroy crops (Greenhouse gases, 2012).
Question 5
Rachel Carson was a United States marine biologist who became a full environmental activist. The sea trilogy explored the ocean life and managed to write two of the most thrilling and bestselling books called “The Sea Around Us” and “The Silent Spring.” The most environmentally concerned book was the “Silent Spring” which talked about the environmental concern on the use of pesticide. This book inspired the creation of several environment concerned agencies to fight for the environmental conservation (Munton, 2002).
Question 6
The Love Canal is a water body located in LaSalle in New York City. Documentary records indicate that in the mid-1970s, the story of the Love Canal rocked the world environmental attention. It was revealed that the site was used to bury 21, 00 tons of toxic waste by the Occidental Petroleum Company. This incident resulted in detrimental effects on the environment leading to public health emergency (Munton, 2002).
