In October 2013 California Jerry Brown signed the Assembly Bill 60 (AB60) into law which allows illegal immigrants living in California eligible to apply for a driver’s license. Early this year, the law took effect and thousands of undocumented immigrants lined up at the California Department of Motor Vehicles to file their application.
The issue of granting driver’s license to undocumented immigrants is a debatable matter up to this time. One believes that this move by the California government is a welcome development. There are several reasons why one is in agreement with this law. First, giving driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants will make the streets of California safer because they can be given the appropriate training. A lot of these immigrants do not have the proper education on driving. It is a given fact that these immigrants need to drive to bring them to places and whether they have licenses or not, they still insist on driving. This makes other people on the streets in a very dangerous position. Subjecting them to a driving test, as required to get a license, can make the streets safer.
The second point why one agrees with this law is that the undocumented immigrants will be forced to get a driver’s insurance. The insurance will serve as a protection for all drivers and individuals on the road. Insurance payments are good for the economy.
The third reason why undocumented immigrants should be given a driver’s license is to allow them to integrate to the American society. Issuing them a driver’s license will provide them with an additional identification. These immigrants also contribute to the American economy; thus, must also be given equal opportunities. If they have a driver’s license, they can already travel longer distances which may open up new and better employment opportunities for them. Better jobs would mean better salaries; therefore, better for the American economy in terms of taxes.
A driver’s license means so much to the undocumented immigrants. It would mean that they can now live “normally”, that is, drive to schools, offices, hospitals, etc. without the fear of being apprehended by the police. They can now go on vacations with their families which help improve the country’s economy. Indeed, one feels that this law is a victory for the undocumented immigrants.
