Any company has a collection of unique resources and capabilities that enable them to provide their goods and services to their customers. United parcel service is a United States of America based company whose sole business is to timely deliver packages within the America, Europe and Asia. One of their most valuable resources is the modes of transporting their packages. The company has trucks and vans that are used to deliver their parcels within the United States. Moreover, vehicles are considered mobile because they are not limited to use by only one branch or firm. However, they are short lived because after sometime they may be exhausted and become old. Some vehicles may also be involved in accidents hence minimizing their lifespan (Daft, & Marcic, 2009).
In addition, the company also has an airline ‘McDonnell Douglas’ which transport parcels over long distances. The airline is an important resource to the company because it is relatively faster and more efficient compared to other modes of transport. Airplanes are highly mobile across different firms as they can serve all the organizations branches at the same time.
The company’s staff is also very important mobile resource within the organization. For instance, united parcel services have got highly competent staff that carries out their business. The staff includes those who are employed as messengers, truck drivers, pilots, and even people who work at their various stores (Daft, & Marcic, 2009). The employees’ skills are highly mobile across different firms because a staff can be easily transferred from one branch to another or even from one business to another and still fit in. However, a staff may be short lived because one can resign or be retrenched hence leaving the organization before the intended time.
Technological advances in a company are also key resources that are considered highly mobile across firms. A single technology can be employed by different firms which carry out similar or related activities. United parcel services uses different computer programs that enable them to manage their inventory of sent packages at different stations. In the case of technological advances, the previous technology becomes inferior to the latest and a company must adjust accordingly in order to remain competitive.
