The United States Supreme Court should be independent of any influence by other federal branches of government. Therefore, the institution should be steered clear of any political pressures or any political affiliations. It should be allowed to make clear and unbiased rulings in any case or issue that is presented to it by considering the integrity of the nation as well the court itself. The balance between the legislative and executive organs of the government has been achieved by the United States Supreme Court by delivering rulings in a proper and unbiased manner without being influenced by any of these arms of government.
The U.S Supreme Court has also managed to maintain independence by carrying out checks and balances and thus it has earned some control of operations that is free from any influence from the other federal branches. However, due to the Constitution’s outline, no single branch is supposed to become too powerful because each one of them has powers to check the balance of operations of the other. Hence, the separation of powers prevents tyranny and domination of one branch over another. In the ruling on the legality of same-sex marriages, Chief Justice Roberts affirmed that the judges have the power to interpret what the law is and not what is should be as they did in the ruling of the same-sex marriages (Soergel 2015).
The source of the institutions and the basis of American government are clearly defined in the Constitution and an analytical perspective, all the system or organs of government works in harmony to avoid conflicting with each other in their decision making (Lowi et al. 2015). The United States Supreme Court has managed to carry out its checks and balances mandate or obligation without much interference from other organs although the fact that there has been some influence cannot be entirely ruled out. The branch of government should work in independence to ensure its sovereignty and unconventionality in interpreting the Constitution.
