Learning Activity 1 - Theme 1
Using the readings for the week, how should a manager approach his or her job? What ideas should be their watchwords? Think of things like setting goals, making decisions, motivating employees and allocating resources. What mindset should a good manager have to approach these tasks?
A great manager has different approaching his or her job in a broader perspective so that the organizational goals are achieved efficiently while the expectations of the employees are also achieved. The manager must first understand the environment around him. A great manager does not make a move without understanding the environment around him (Davenport & Watson, 2013). A great manager is distinguished from the manager by his unique ability to take the things in a holistic approach. The great manager always tries to find the unique ability in his employees and then implements various techniques to capitalize them for the benefit of both the organization and the organization itself. They make their well-planned movements and actions which are not based on their single ideas. Rather they discuss the situation with all, understands and collects the view of the subordinates and make the decision. In this way, they become serious in valuing the eccentric and unique abilities of each employee which is then integrated into the work plan and strategy.
The manager must be committed to the achievement of organizational goals by treating fairly to all the employees. There must not be any favoritism and nepotism in the employees related issues. The one performing high with adherence to organizational policies and environment must be rewarded high.
A good manager drives his activity with a planned goal. The goals are set smart, and they direct their activity according to the goals pre-set. The goals drive the activities of the manager, and the resources are allocated according to the goal. The decision is also made based on the goal. Decision making is participative where an opinion from all the employees are considered while making a decision. The manager is open to suggestion and feedback; each alternative is discussed thoroughly with the subordinates in the decision-making course (Davenport & Watson, 2013). In addition to this, a great manager is equally concerned about the motivation of the employees. The employee satisfaction is put in the highest order so that the employee is motivated. Resource allocation is also based upon the plan and the importance of the project. The manager allocates the resource in such a way that there is minimal wastage of resources.
Learning Activity 2 - Theme 2
Discuss how you would solve this problem. Consider motivation techniques, mentoring or other ideas from the readings to effectuate positive change. Use the readings to support your reasoning.
Any problem-solving technique needs a good set of managerial skill. A good managerial skill forms the base on which the problem is understood in the broader perspective, and the cause or reason behind the turnover is identified. Without understanding the problem at first hand, it is impossible to solve the problem. After understanding the problem, it is also equally important to motivate the employees. When the employees do not find the reason to work, they leave. So, by implementing the motivation technique, the company must make them feel that their work is important for the company and company value his work. A company does not have to put huge effort in motivating the employees, rather simple words of praising and appreciating the work of employees, revising their perks and benefits with their participation, inviting them for decision making, or working together with them at a same level and appreciating their effort can motivate them (Davenport & Watson, 2013). Appreciating their effort and accepting their mistakes as a learning process is equally important to motivate employees. Instead of punishing employees when they make mistakes in the course of performing duty, the manager can teach them that it's natural for mistakes to happen. This can motivate the employee.
Mentoring together with motivation is important to reduce the turnover. When the employee finds them in a position where they are groomed properly, where they are getting opportunities to perform big roles, then they will feel privileged to work for such organization. So, an organization must always be ready to mentor their staffs where employees can learn new skill sets to move ahead in their career progression. Mentoring too can produce higher performance (Harrison, 2014). Apart from these, the employees must be treated as the assets of the company. When the organization treats them as its part, then employees will develop the feeling of ownership in the organization and eventually the turnover decreases.
