Urban Health: Exemplar Essay To Follow

The purpose of the State of the City event by Mayor Sly James is to let the people know about the issues that existed and the development that has been done in Kansas City, the progress and the improvement that has happened in the city related to the infrastructure in terms of fulfilling water shortage, drainage facilities, raising new jobs for employment, and providing good education. The developments in the city have been efficient and the public provided positive survey results on the changes made to the city. The mayor focuses on four main important issues such as education, efficiency, employment and enforcement that have been taken care in the city, and applauds all the citizens of Kansas city for owning up to the responsibility as responsible citizens for their city.
I believe that the event accomplished the purpose, because the message from the mayor reached out to millions of people as it was broadcasted online, and to the audience who gathered in the Uptown Theater. Audience had gathered to understand the state of the city and the achievements done by the mayor since 2011. They were made aware of the previous situation that existed in the city such as low citizen satisfaction levels, businesses being closed in the city, high violence rates, continuing recession, increasing subprime mortgage prices on the eastern side of Kansas. Overall the city was stagnant without any improvements happening in any domain. Though citizens wanted to continue living in Kansas, they could hardly have a good reason to continue staying the city because of the underdeveloped infrastructure.
The target audience were the people who serve in an elective office, including the Missouri State Treasurer Clint Zweifel from Jefferson City. Apart from the people from the elective office, I believe the main target audience are the citizens who would listen about the accomplishments and what contributions they made in developing the city.
The event had many good points to be noted, which would make a responsible citizen feel proud. The mayor congratulated and appreciated all the contributors who have helped in achieving a good reputation for the Kansas City. Various testimonials were shown that were related to education, efficiency, employment and enforcement. Two firefighters Larry Leggio and John Mesh were remembered, honored, and a moment of silence was observed for the departed souls. The two firefighters had lost their lives fighting a fire and saving many people’s lives. I feel the citizens were induced with a sense of security to live in Kansas City because of the initiatives taken to make the city safe by collaborating with NoVA.
There are a few things in the event, which I think could have been elaborated and other issues that could be informed. Mayor informs about the Launch KC 2016, beginning in the first week of April, but did not inform about the initiatives that would be taken in this new season. As this event was for people to know about the state of the city, I believe that the mayor should have given many real life examples of the people who have contributed immensely towards the development of the city. It is good to know that Google Fiber selected two Kansas cities to implement the gigabit fiber; however, the mayor fails to explain the reasons behind google choosing these two cities implementation.
The event was an eye opener for all the people who got to hear and analyze the conditions of the city. The event was well received by the audience, and measures were taken to plan and implement new ideas for the city. The event could be better if more visuals and videos were shown that are related health, and how the earlier city infrastructure had impacted the physical and mental lives of the citizens, and how these things would change going ahead. The Smart + Connected city is a good technology to change the small cities into smart cities, and I believe this technology can be implemented in such small cities.
