Dear Mr. Wilson and Mr. Brown,
RE: IMPEDING ELIMINATION OF FUNDING THE WRITING CENTER
Since UVU began planning on cutting the budget, one of the favorite ideas is to cut the budget for the writing center. Allow me to bring to your attentions some of the facts that make this plan the least tenable and not in agreement with the core business of the university.
First, the Writing Centre helps students and faculty members on how to carry our research and correct mistakes by assisting them to realize and revise them. It offers a unique service that complements teaching in the UVU. The budget cuts may lead to bigger classes that would make it hard for tutors to reach all the students. In this regard, the role of the Writing Center would become the only remaining refuge for the weak students. Since this is the core business of the institution, I believe that it is prudent to retain the budget of the Writing Centre. Cutting its budget would mean the center would not reach as many learners as it does today.
Besides, the budget of the center is significantly small compared to other departments. The center has only one paid faculty employee, and the rest are graduate teaching assistants whose pay is less than that of the faculty members. Even with the little budget the center operates optimally and achieves all set goals. In this case, eliminating its budget would not give the anticipated impacts on the UVU revenues but may end up been costly in the long-run.
I, therefore, implore you, sir, to consider supporting the writing center concerning the budget cuts. It is the only other option the students and the faculty members to make their skills better. Besides, it serves the core objectives of the university. The center would appreciate your efforts. Thank you.
