What It Really Costs When Walmart Comes to Town
SUMMERY OF ARTICLE:
Wal-Mart has faced difficult time managing the community issues and concerns. When Wal-Mart closed its operation of low-performing store, it was criticized by community members that it has closed the discount stores and raised the employment level in the particular area and now closing down its own store as well. Wal-Mart has tried its level best to function as Corporate Socially Responsible Company, but the effort has not shown positive results (Dave, p.2).
STATEMENT OF HOW THE ARTICLE RELATES TO THIS CLASS:
In a class, we have discussed the topic in unit 2 of ethics and corporate social responsibility. As discussed in class, it is important that a company should deeply relate to the impact of business operations on the society. The impact on society of Wal-Mart operation has risen. When a company opens its store in a small town, it drives out the discount stores and the employment level rises. The employees are not paid well that they can support their families due to which the poverty level rises at some rate within that particular town (Anthony, p.46). The method that Wal-Mart uses to clean construction sites is not considered to be appropriate and tons of material flows in the river in rain season which leaves a negative impact on people’s health because they drink that unhygienic water. The small trees planted near stores by Wal-Mart they leave pesticide and fertilizer which can impact the community and animals as a whole. This clearly demonstrates that Wal-Mart has been unable to fulfill its duty of corporate social responsibility.
